This topic thread has been created for the future battles/conflicts in Vhaerun and surrounding areas. As the bulk of the scene has shifted from Sirenia to Vhaerun, and for the ease of reading the battles in order, providing attack and defense posts, this thread was created. Please use it as much as you can. Any posts not related to this conflict in general can be started on its own thread. (The posts here don't have to be just battle posts, but posts in relation to the conflict in question).

Imnistra "Istra" Yril'Lysaulur Enters the Scene
Imnistra Yril'Lysaulur remembered where she was when the messenger had arrived in the underdark city. She had been just about to win a game of cards when the sound of some heralding drow paraded through the city environs. Quickly before she could even fathom what was going on, her fellow house mates and other Drow houses were scrambling to assert their valuables, which in this case meant their weaponry. It seemed like this was big trouble of sorts. She stood up from her cards and threw them down on the ground (a straight, a winning hand for sure) demanding, "What the hell is going on? Are we under attack or is this some one's idea of a practical joke!" She glanced around quickly to see if anyone could even so much as reveal the meaning of this.
It wasn't long before another Drow came up to her quickly and with heavy breathing said, "Tlintith reports that the Priestess of Lloth is sending an army through Vhaerun, planning to torch the land and all its denizens. I'm going to join the front."
"Istra" as she was more commonly called (because saying her entire name seemed like quite a mouthful) seemed to look her kin in disbelief, "So, after all this time, the traitor's decided to try to destroy us all, is she?" Yeah, who didn't know about Zarra in Vhaerun (both the city and the land). She was thought to have been not only foolish and a traitor, but, just a nuisance in her own right.
Another drow came from behind her and patted her back, "So, what are you going to do Istra? You've been looking for some excitement for a good while, haven't you? Well here's your big chance..."
Istra just gave a crooked smile, "Well it feels as good a time as any, I'd say, and if that witch wants to dance with us, then I say we dance." She got up from the table and pushed her bright white hair out of her face and reached into her belt buckle purse to retrieve a silver coin. She flipped it upside from her thumb and shot it towards the barkeep, before she along with several others rushed outside into the city streets where already an alarm of some sort was filling the underdark air. Several of her kin were already ascending the stairs to the surface, and taking their positions on the stronghold's walls, while many others no doubt were heading into the woods towards the Main Road.
As soon as Istra have gathered her traveling items, as well as her usual assortment of weapons, she and a few other Drow from her house took to the main gate. Looking out, they noticed our unusually murky it was thanks to the pouring rain, which was causing the fog to be more detrimental than usual.
"Well..." Istra said with a fun chuckle, "I always did enjoy going in somewhat blind." She didn't have a horse, nor did she need one. She could just as easily dart from tree to tree thanks to her high reflect jumping dash skills. Now her only hope was that she'd make it in time for the fight!
At that exact moment, she wandered if maybe she had heard a dragon... Okay, hopefully she wasn't going in over her head...

The Tieflings Join in the Fray
Misery had returned to his home at Fire Mountain, where his clan of Tieflings made their home within the mountain of fire. He was in the library reading up on something that had been piqued his mind for a while. It was just as he was reading for a cup of hot tea that he received the news that he had been waiting on. He crossed his arms and emitted a playful smirk when he was told the news about Zarra's army making a move on Vhaerun.
"So, the Drow Priestess has a desire to conquer Vhaerun, does she? ...Very interesting... I wonder how she's been able to amass such a force in the first place, especially right under our noses..." Misery sat up from his chaired position, and reached for his trusty magician's staff. He stood tall, his velvet robes shimmering amid the illumination of the library grand fireplace, his back turned from the messenger who stood waiting patiently at the doorway. Misery brought a thumb to his chin, then up to his fangs as he examined the flames flickering from the fireplace, seemingly in a deep meditative thought, his crimson eyes burning brightly. "I spoke to a Sea-Wanderer Drow, whose name escapes me, but no matter. it goes against my fiendish nature, but, I think we should aid them, at least for now..."
The messenger at the doorway seemed confused, his eyes appearing almost delirious, before the tiefling mystic explained further, "The way I see it, my friend, they are in a bit of a hot spot at the moment, and surely are desperate for aid of some kind. I saw their pathetic forces, and quite frankly, I wasn't impressed to say the least. With their current numbers, they only stand a glimmer of a chance of even standing their own ground." Gripping the wand tightly, the tiefling blazing eyes turned around to face the follower, "Besides, if all goes as I hope it does, then they will be owing US a favor, and with Zarra's forces either decimated or withered just enough, that is when, we'll make our own move, and this time, we'll have the Vhaerun drow on our side, chanting us as their heroes."
The tiefling's ruby red hair glimmered in the dimly lit room as he would explain further walking towards the messenger, who still hadn't moved an inch from the entryway, "Zarra has secretively done us a huge favor. The Vhaerun Drow has been vastly disorganized and alienated from each another for quite some time now, various squabbles and disagreements have made them unable to see eye-to-eye." He exhaled a brief before resting a warm hand on the messenger's right shoulder, his tone glowing now, "But this... this will unite them all, in true patriotism. They now have a common enemy, one that most of them have deemed a traitor, at least in theory." He was chuckling now, thinking how too good to be true and perfect this was all becoming, "Triple the guard, and assemble our forces. We make our way to the Vhaerun coast upon the morn..." The messenger would nod and disperse immediately from Misery's sight.
He had never met the Drow Priestess in person, and he didn't want to, at least right away. Sure he could help her, but, if there was anything Misery knew about Drow it was that, they often would kill you even if you looked at them wrong. "Frankly, it's nothing personal, really, it's just... too good an opportunity to pass up, truly..."
Moments later, the tiefling mage exited the underground caverns buried beneath the volcano and wrinkled his face when he just happened to come in contact with a rather large rain drop, and then the downpour hit him like a bucket of water tossed from a passerby. He shook his entire body like a mangy mutt, "By the Nine Hells, I detest rain, but, I'll just have to deal with it..." Hurriedly he went back inside to make arrangements. It seemed like the Blackmoor Tieflings would be joining this war after all, and if all went as planned, it would be the beginning of much greater things to come....

Since we are at the edge of the sim, there are positions I can't take pictures from.

I haven't taken pictures of Vicona's whole route, but the passes are obvious on the sim. It's also obvious that Ashliin is on the heights in the sim, although it isn't terribly visible in these pictures.

This follows hard on the heels of Fire Rain.
It was Ashliin and her troops who heard them, beneath the wind: for she was crouched beneath a mottled grey two-layered tarp on the high rock west of the gorge, above the River. The Chieftess and her troops were higher, on the east side.
Hoofbeats. A clink here and there. An occasional very quiet voice.
Ashliin frowned, briefly puzzled, and then a second later formed an 'O' with her lips.
Vicona wasn't fighting her way straight through Vhaerun.
She was flanking them and coming through the western pass.
They were hearing her army passing down below.
Ashliin was not alone in her tension or her alertness. Her people were listening, their poses suddenly taut. They were seated or lying on the rocks, likewise beneath wide tarps: camouflage above, oilcloth below. At least, with the cold torrential rains spilling over the tarps and down the rocks away from them, they weren't completely soaked.
Ashliin did not have to signal for silence. No one spoke. For long minutes, no one moved.
In her mind's eye, she surveyed the bay. Then the weapons her people had painstakingly built here, or hauled here (which she could not literally see either: they also were covered). Then she considered the very high eastern ground where the Chieftess' wing lay hidden. Then the river.
Two of her larger engines were aimed at the lowlands across, upriver. They could not be turned. But most were already set to hurl across the harbor: Ashliin's wing had the better angle on it, and her mother had never lost the conviction that they would be attacked there. The smaller engines -- the majority ballistae firing armor-piercing bolts -- they could turn.
But not yet. Not while the enemy might hear them. Not while the drakes were fresh.
She wished she dared signal her mother.
When the drake flames flared orange down in the bay, when they heard the shouts and the tumult of the attackers riding down the pass, Ashliin touched her lieutenant's shoulder, silently. She signalled in turn; and quietly they hastily uncovered the engines.
Against them: the wind and the rain: they could not always see.
Against them: they could not shoot ranging shots against the moving drakes, as they might against thick stone walls.
Against them: flying foes who breathed fire.
In their favor: small but vital: the horsehair torsion springs of the ballistae were treated to repel water. They could still send armor-piercing bolts against the enemy, despite the storm.
In their favor: the wind and the rain: if they could not see well, neither could the enemy.
In their favor: height. Even the smaller missiles would hit with force.
In their favor: height, again: for Vicona would fight hard ere she took Ashliin's position. And the Chieftess's was scarcely assailable at all, save by the drakes: without flight little but a siege could bring her down.
In their favor: surprise. Because they were supposed to be down below, burning, fleeing perhaps, being butchered. But neither she nor her mother had seen a military purpose in keeping to their dwellings.
Eventually Vicona must realize, from the direction of the shots, where they were. Must realize that she had, unseeing, walked close beneath them in the storm and the wind and the pouring rain and rising mists.
But she wouldn't see it before she recognized that Amerakhte would determinedly smash every last dwelling in her own harbor, in order to slay the ones who threatened her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren.
They did not strike immediately.
Offer up the sacrifice of their homes. Let the drakes destroy. Let them expend their terrible flames.
Amerakhte and her part of the forces were concealed on the summit of the tough core of an ancient volcano whose sides had eroded around it. It was tall and exceedingly steep, and it had been a struggle to raise any engines at all to this height: nevertheless they had winched the pieces of smaller engines up and assembled them at the top. They had not the range of the larger engines Ashliin's wing would wield; but Amerakhte had more of the mages.
She crawled under her tarp nearer to the edge of the cliff, and looked out.
More than half the crannochs were aflame, all over the bay, together with many of the remaining docks, and such boats as had not sailed far from the harbor.
Some more recent and richer constructions had been treated with an alchemical flame-retardant, and not as many of those were ablaze: they could be set to burning, but it took more effort.
The drakes were now turning away, fires exhausted. Shouts were now coming from the shore: she could not mostly make them out, at this height, over the storm winds.
It was time. She spoke to her lieutenants, and her people uncovered and readied the weapons. A sorceress shone a shielded light westward, for Ashliin.
She needed surprise. She could not see a way to spare the horses.
When she saw the engines were loaded -- the ballistae with armor-piercing bolts, the other engines with grapeshot, masses of stones, scattershot -- she gave the order to shoot.
The trebuchet was small as trebuchets go; it was still a more efficient engine than other catapults. The wooden chassis rocked as the great arm, released, rotated forward, flinging its sling of deadly missiles over the bay, speeding towards the foe. Swarms of steel and stone arced through the air over the heads of the invaders and plummeted toward them.
Some of them crashed through roofs. Splashed into the water. Gouged the earth and sent it spraying around them when they struck.
When she looked across the river, Amerakhte saw that Ashliin's wing had shot slightly later. But their missiles had not so far to fall.
After the first shots of the engines, Amerakhte signalled the archers, who let loose a storm of arrows into the air. Had they been shooting at particular targets, they might have missed. But archers in battle do not commonly behave like hunters, sighting particular quarry, aiming carefully, and loosing. Instead they fire en masse aloft in the enemy's direction, and the arrows fall like rain, to wound and to kill.
They would reload the ballistae and shot again with reasonable dispatch; but the trebuchet would take time -- time to haul the arm back down, time to reload the sling.
On the lower western height, Ashliin was doing much the same as Amerakhte. But her position was more assailable. Consequently she had her women ringed about her in a common defensive formation: pikes on the outside, then swords and axes, then archers.
If they were attacked by cavalry, the pikewomen would brace their long weapons, crouch or go down on one knee, and let the charging animals impale themselves. If they were attacked by infantry, the swordswomen and axewomen would step past the pikes to defend. And in both cases the archers would letting fly from the inner ring as the enemy approached.
Inside the ring of archers, in this case, were the engines and their crews. The ballistae were reloaded already and starting to shoot again -- three-foot, inch-and-a-quarter thick bolts with armor-piercing bodkin heads, such as could penetrate armor and pin the victims to trees. The trebuchet crew were busy hauling down the arm against the heft of the counterweight.
The archers now were sending arrow after arrow aloft into the winds toward the foe.
This is not supposed to be cryptic, but I've been trying to put it together for a while and it's proving difficult to beat into shape. If I haven't made something clear, let me know.
If it sounds like it's supposed to be a devastating counterattack -- it is. The first strike involves the near-simultaneous release of every missile weapon, by surprise, from an advantageous position. I would expect to see more casualties in this first counterattack than at any subsequent exchange.
Ships -- There are none in the harbor, but there are some in the storm outside it. The weather is horrible; most of them probably are not visible; but the drakes might conceivably see one or two. If they want to attack the ships, they will find that they are warships with a couple of small ballistae aboard (in the fore- and after castles) and a complement of marines, who will be armed with sabres, bows, and crossbows. Some of the ships have had the wood treated, and everything is soaked tonight, but they still have pitch caulking and can probably be set afire with enough determination or luck. I did not include the ships in the main post because neither Amerakhte nor Ashliin can see any, and this is long and complicated enough as it is.
I did write about mages with Amerakhte. I have not said what they are doing and if I don't have to, I won't, because I want more time to think before I introduce battle magic that's not related to communication or some civilian art.
Amerakhte is an elf. Consequently she can replace buildings much faster than she can replace people.
Alchemical flame retardant: Generally simple boron compounds. A relatively recent discovery.
Amerakhte is the chieftess of the drow clan living along the southwestern coast of Lisianthus.
Ashliin is her third daughter, commanding the other wing of Amerakhte's warband.
Various warriors and sorceresses of the sea clan.
Vicona and her army are invading Amerakhte's territory as partisans of Zarra, High Priestess of Lloth, now serving Blackmoor.

((OOC Notes: The "Stronghold" with the wall is actually Vhaerun City. At the time of creation, it was the primarily RP point before you brought in your coast clan. However, for the purposes of at least trying to convey the scene in pictures, it matters little which area you use, so in this case, your map works rather well. At some point, we can expand the lands a bit more to include a proper coastline, if you anticipate future RP scenes in this area. Which reminds, me, I need to get rid of those trees, haha)).

Viconia and her army marvelled in delight in witnessing the view of the coastal fortress ablaze. They were standing right near the bay, and could see the gloomy water that signaled the coastline. They had reached their destination. Even the atrocious weather could not damper her spirits, she could smell victory within her grasp. She pictures the numerous corpses of the drow, many of them probably underneath the rubble. The sounds of horrendous screams in unison filled her barbarian heart with pleasure.
He was late. Some signal, any signal would have been sufficient, but she had received no word from Welverin’s army. No matter, she wasn’t the patient sort of drow who would idly stand by and wait for something to happen. The army was just fodder to be used up and merely overwhelmed their adversaries by numbers along. Never in the history of Vhaerun had any single group amassed as large as army as what she had packing heat in this moment. Four thousand strong and already they had the advantage in numbers no doubt thanks to the advantageous assault by Zarra’s drakes.
“Victory, I can nearly taste it…” Viconia proclaimed, licking her lips in anticipation that her dream was just about to come true.
The fire drakes returned to the gathered group, clearly having used their abilities to maximum effectiveness and now exhausted all the same. If was at the moment that Viconia was reaching out to pet one of them when one of her captains billowed in a cry “Incoming fire at the front!”. Viconia tensed up as her army had a split second to turn about where quickly a wave of flung rocks were falling like meteors on her right flank. “Hold your positions!” she yelled as her units braced for impact. Some took cover, while others no doubt would succumb to their fate.
((OOC: The armies numbers are pretty even, but Viconia’s army is better trained, outfitted, and generally more powerful than Amerakhte and
Ashliin’s armies. Therefore, for the purposes of the FATE system, I’m going to assign the Drow Armies with a base strength of +4 (Great) each, and Viconia’s and Welverin’s Armies at +6 (Fantastic) each. Defense-wise with dexterity, Viconia’s army is well armored, for the most part, and so, I will assign a base defense (dexterity) at +4 (Great). Both drow armies’ base defense (dexterity) is +5 (Superb), as they have a better position defensively.
In order for one side to “win”, one side has to be taken out or to give in / concede. How do we interpret damage? By the stress track and through consequences. Learn more about that here: https://fate-srd.com/fate-accelerated/ouch-damage-stress-and-consequences.
Both Ashliin and Amerakhte’s armies have stress tracks of 4. Viconia and Welverins’ armies have stress tracks of 4. Each group has one mild (2 shifts), one moderate (4 shifts), and one severe (6 shifts) consequence slot. A shift of damage is basically +1. As Nyza is the GM, he will handle all the math stuff, all you need to do is provide the narrative in response to the action outcome).
Amerakhte’s First Attack Wave, STR +4 vs Viconia’s Army, DEX +4
Amerakhte rolls a +1. Total = 4 + 1 = 5
Viconia rolls a 0. Total = 4 + 0 = 4
Result: 5 - 4 = 1 (1 shift) of damage on Viconia’s Army (Success)
It was raining rocks en mass to her right flank, and while many of them splashed harmlessly into the ocean, many more still managed to crash violently into the army’s defenses. A buckler shield even against a 100 pound rock was nearly useless, and more units broke formation to try to avoid getting squashed by the boulders. Still, the majority of the army was able to abate the surprise attack. Viconia yelled out, “They’ve lured us into the bay, and have surrounded us on both the west and east sides! Cretins! Well it’ll take more than rocks to distraught us!”
Just as they were facing forward towards the torched dwellings of the drows, their ears could pick up traces of the sound of a hissing noise. Despite the torrential rains and occasional crashes of thunder and flashes of lightning, the sound of a volleying of arrows was unmistakable. Soldiers narrowed down to the ground and rose their shields in the air (if they had any) to try to block the incoming rain of arrows. But then they were coming from the front as well. They were surrounded by rocks and arrows on both the east and west sides.

Then came the volley of arrows, hissing through the air as they began to rain down on the troops. Grunts and moans filled the air with every successful piercing and Viconia herself was within ear shot of one particular arrow. She had expected a counterattack from what drow forces might remain, but the extent of the wave of attack surprised her. Why hadn’t the fire drakes claimed more lives? Perhaps the drow were better defended than she had thought. No matter, there were ways around this. When there was a break in the action, Viconia’s noticed that her army was still in very good shape. The first two waves had done minor damages, even if it had appeared worse than how it had actually played out.
The tall drow commander hissed under her breath, but cracked her whip to implore her own regiment to prepare a proper counterattack on the west line (Ashliin’s band). Her troops quickly turned about, locking their own weaponry of longbow and artillery in their ready positions. Viconia gleamed with the biggest grin imaginable, as she charismatically shouted, “READY… AIM… FIRE!”

The storm raged on, but from Viconia’s point of view, it seemed the storm itself was providing additional cover, as the ranged weaponry did not seem to have the desired effect, but still, it was exhilarating to see her forces in action. She was about to launch a second wave when the sound of a low brass horn filled the air, louder than even the most deafening thunderbolt. She caught a glimmer as a bolt of lightning flashed and she could see a large army of orcs and other reptilian creatures on the other side of the river, just behind Amerakhte’s position atop the high column cliff that looked like an inactive volcano. The fire drakes were still recharging their next round of flame attacks, so it was eventful that Welverin’s army had finally arrived, better late than never, in this case.
Welverin exhaled deeply as his rain-drenched cloak was a mess. The orcs and their associates had long complained about the rain, but were still getting pumped up for battle. Their grunts and music playing had been inspirational, to say the least. He pulled out a map to assess their position. They were in the right place, and not a moment too soon it looked like. He caught a glimpse of Viconia’s army (it was almost impossible to miss, they were, after all, in the middle of everything), and could vaguely make out that they were being shot at by two armies, one located just above them in the creator of a volcano, and the other somewhere behind the forested hillside. Clever these seaside drow ere, but with the army he had amassed (though not compared to Viconia’s army, of course), he felt it would be sufficient to turn the tides in their favor. Then when all was said and done, he could return to Zarra and claim that which is so richly deserved.
Because of the sheer defenses of Amerakhte’s position embedded within the volcano. He felt it would be vital to take out one army at a time, in particular Ashllin’s forces first. He caught eye of Zarra’s fire drakes, having seen them up close in person when he had been with her not more than two weeks ago. They could take the battle to the volcano as needed, while the two ground forces could assume Ashllin’s position. Simply taking out that army alone would dramatically shift the balance well within their favor.
He ordered his main battalion to remain stationed just beneath the volcanic column, and within the trees to shelter them from any artillery. The natural cover from the west side would prevent any long range attacks from having much of an effect as they could simply hide within the shadow of the cliffs, however, any sort of short-range attack could potentially still have an effect. When there was a break in the action, Welverin unleashed a wave of his infantry of orcs and assortment of nefarious goons towards Ashllin’s position. None of them were flyers of any sort, or magicians. But where they lacked in magic, they more than made up in brute strength.
Viconia’s smiled when she saw the parade of orcs and company come rushing towards them, crossing the barely deep river, and assailing to their positions. Welverin had delivered on his promise, and he had delivered well. Among the orcs and ogres were some serpents as she could smell their venomous breath. As the rampaging infantry came to their position, she would instruct her own cavalry to swing around to the left side from whence they originally came. Welverin’s first wave went to the right in response. Their plan was to pincer Ashllin’s forces from both sides.
Welverin’s First Wave + Viconia’s Cavalry Charge, STR +6 vs Ashllin’s Army DEX +5
Welverin rolls a -1. Total = -1 + 6 = 5.
Ashllin rolls a -4 (Ouch!). Total = -4 + 5 = 1. Uses a Fate Point to re-roll (2 remaining). 2nd roll is a -2. Total = -2 + 5 = 3.
Result: Welverin’s army and Viconia’s Cavalry Charge successfully attacks (Succeed) and does 2 shifts of damage (5 - 3). ((Ashllin will need to provide a narrative for the attack causing relatively minor harm, and she checks her Box 2 on her Stress Track, which takes the stress of the +2 of damage). She has two stress boxes (+1 and +3) remaining, and all her consequences remaining).
Viconia listened to the sounds of screams as they filled the air. The sound of hard steel rings loud and true. This was the result she had been hoping for. But the battle had only just begun, and playtime was merely starting. She was hoping that Zarra was watching carefully from afar, and perhaps even trembling a bit at the combined might of the two armies.
((Next post goes to Istra, then Misery, then Ashllin and Amerakhte, and we’re just getting started! It's not looking good for Ashllin's forces in the beginning, but gradually, the number of armies may eventually outnumbered Viconia and Welverin's armies, which may result in more attacks/damage on them - only time will tell!))
The rain wasn’t stopping. Curse being cold, and wet, and miserable.
If there was anything that could dampen one’s spirit, it was callous weather, particularly thundershowers and high winds. Especially when it was ongoing. In this case, it had been going on for a straight week.
Istra was tired, but she wasn’t about to give into stopping. A group of around 500 was within her range, hiking through the foggy forest amid the piss poor weather. When anyone threatened one’s homeland, you pushed aside your inner emotions in regards to not ideal conditions, for the sake of nationalism and for the greater cause.
As the band was ascending a gentle hill, they could smell and hear a battle nearby. When they reached the hill’s crest, the entire bay came into view, and they knew from the sight of the situation that this was their destination. They had arrived.
Istra was no commander. She had led the group simply from her navigation skills alone. Once the bay was in view, a few of the fiercer drow warriors took charge. She looked back behind her to assess the situation. They had no artillery. There were a few Drow who could harness the powers of magic, but the majority stationed behind her were archers and assassins with small blades.
Resuming her glance forward, Istra surveyed the environs. There was a high cliff to their left, the bay in the middle with one or two large armies, whom she guessed were Zarra’s, and on the far right atop the hillside within the skeleton forest was another army, whom she came to acknowledge was probably another of the defending drow armies, though she couldn’t be certain.
The commanders were barking orders, trying to arrange the group into a particular arrangement befitting to the scene. One group would quietly blend in with the trees and try to shoot from their position, while the main group would remain stagnant right on the main road leading towards the bay. This way, if either of the enemy armies tried to advance on the army in the trees, then the army on the road could pull in behind and attack from the rear. Assuming the other drow army already on the scene on the hillside wasn’t destroyed, they would be able to assist, and Blackmoor’s armies would be trapped and their only way of escape would be to fight their way out, taking heavy losses.
Istra could tell they were vicious and mean. It would take more than one arrow at least to bring one of their adversaries down. Even from her vantage point, she could see the races of the recruits: drow, orcs, goblins, reptilians, and who knows what else. The enemy army outnumbered them probably 10 to 1, but they had the advantage of height, and cover.
Istra was given her orders to go with the first group. She nodded. She would rather have a closer look at her foes before she even began to kill. She was no coward, and was ready to die this day if it came to that. Drow often knew that every day could be their last, and today was no different for her.
Quietly, her faction crept through the dark forests amidst the fog and storms. It would take at least 30 minutes to get into position. She reckoned it might be the longest half hour of her life…
((Note: Despite there now being two groups of Vhaerun’s forces now on the scene, they are generally weaker than Viconia’s army due to lack of numbers in comparison. Together the army is probably a +2 (Fair) with regards to Fate, Despite there being two separate groups, my forces will only get 1 attack per turn, even if both groups may attack. This results in fewer dice rolls and less confusion with other armies in the area. I’ll attack in my next post, but for now, I’m still taking my positions, sorry Ashllin and Amerakhte, hehehe))

Misery fumed under the downpouring of rain. He should have stayed home perhaps. Let those stupid drow battle each other out all they wanted, he could come back when it smelled like corpses basking in the sun. Ah well, too late for having second thoughts.
He could have taken any direction to Vhaerun he pleased, but he decided on the most direct route. He knew the drow here were suspicious of him, for all they knew, he could be in it with Zarra. Well let them find out the hard way if they should even so much as try to attack his band of one thousand of Blackmoor’s finest. He had no qualms with the drow personally, but if they were seeking a death wish, then he would gladly receive them and bestow upon them that which they yearned for.
He knew Zarra’s army had decided to head to Vhaerun by way of the western route through the mountains. It was a very good move indeed since most drow probably would have suspected the army taking the most direct route through Vhaerun. In this way, they would be avoiding most of the skirmishes along the way, which in turn would result in fewer encounters and almost no diminish in overall strength. He considered taking the same route himself, but, given that time was of the essence, the direct route ideally would work the best.
Surprisingly they didn’t encounter any resistance or slowdown. It would seem merely mentioning the phrase “Death to Zarra and her Allies” was enough for safe passage. It had taken them about a week to arrive to their current position, and he could tell they were close. The sounds of war were near, evident by the wailing screams, the firing of arrows, the charge of horses, the sounds of siege equipment, and ho, let’s not even forget the war cries of berserkers.
About a mile away, he spotted a small force of drow who were motionless, as if they were waiting for something. Glancing further up the way, he spotted a much larger army, who was already in the heat of battle it seemed.
“That’s most likely Viconia’s Legion,” he said to his followers who were just right behind him. “Well now, it looked smaller from afar, but they do have a pretty sizable unit. This might not be a walk in the park after all…” grinning from ear to ear, he would finish with, “Good… I don’t like a blowout.”
Further surveying the vicinity, he could see there were several other corps here. The seaside dwellings where he had met Amerakhte at were already clearly engulfed in flames. But high above was a large towering mound of sorts, perhaps an inactive volcano of sorts. “Good place for hiding…” he suspected.
Levitating slowly above their current position, he would scout around for the best place to attack from. “Beneath the earth column would probably be ideal.” he said quietly to himself. His fellow mages could even head on up to the volcano summit if need be, that would be the best spot to shoot their attacks, while the others remained at the foot of the tower. “Alright, it’s settled.”
Misery and his band headed down to the southeast point. He instructed four of his minions to head over to the small drow army, so they were aware of their move and wouldn’t foolishly attack them. In the midst of this battleground, anything that moved was a liability. When his own unit arrived, it would be their opportunity to unleash hell…

Yeah, I excluded some of the extra stuff, like stunts and such, because frankly, that's deciding a bit more of the character than I'd prefer (however when Misery comes into play, watch out). Yeah, that -4 roll had a 1 percent chance of happening, and I figured Astrid would want a redo LOL so I took a liberty of doing that. Obviously this is a bit more thrilling when it happens live. The reason again why I prefer it is it keeps you on your toes, and forces you to adapt accordingly. Also it makes it easier when both sides kind of want to win and if we want to win, that can drag the fight on a fair bit. The nice thing is really, the GM takes care of all the math and indicates what the results are, then the players simply narrate what happens in their own words. With traditional systems, it's more about the stats than the story.
As for Vhaerun drowning, welll... if Viconia and Co. can finish Aslliin off in a hurry, then maybe, but there's already two more armies on the way (Misery and possibly Istra's) and then it'll be 3 on 2. The way things are going, this fight isn't liable to end too soon. We'll just have to wait and see!

The storm had been brewing over warm water, filling with energy, intensifying. It was the Sei-Varun's misfortune that the eyewall that formed as it strengthened crossed the battlefield precisely when they had begun to attack.
The Chieftess heard the roar sweeping across the harbor even as the archers nocked their arrows and raised their bows. She was not giving to cursing, and she did not do so now. But her lips compressed tightly.
She lifted her face, heedless of the spattering rain, and closed her eyes. Some of the younger drow around her were frowning and looking nervous and puzzled.
Three hundred and seventy-two years ago she'd sailed through a storm that sounded like that: and she'd heard the explanation from an elementalist when they were both clinging grey-knuckled to a twisted shroud still attached to spars that trailed in the water after sudden twisting winds had dismasted the ship. She'd been nonplussed then at his ability to lecture on vortex formation when he might be breathing seawater any minute. Now she suspected he'd been distracting himself.
Possibly the heavy ammunition in the buckets of the trebuchets struck some intended targets; she suspected all the lighter missiles were a loss. But she did not know. The sudden fresh onslaught of wind and rain was blinding and deafening.

Only problem with this is the enemy wasn't attacking Amerakhte at all, they have only been attacking Ashliin. They are out or range thanks to their heightened position. But perhaps Misery had secretively sent out a single assassin to kill Amerakhte instead or there was... something else...? After all, with the fog, it's hart to see in some instances who is actually who. Regardless, we'll go with it because I have a feeling you're setting something up... Well, you're not the only one... *grins* Get ready for the next round!
[Previous attempts at this post did not involve Amerakhte dying of an improbable arrow. They involved me trying to explain why no archers on either side could hit anything when the Sei-Varun at least are definitely in range of some of the enemy, and Vicona's troops probably are. The explanation included the passage of the storm's eyewall and was not as physically unlikely as what I did post, but it had no dramatic interest and further had "I AM AN AD HOC INCIDENT MADE UP TO EXPLAIN DIE ROLLS" on it in 6-ft flaming letters. Attempts at rewriting failed to improve it.
