On the day of battle, March 29.
Khimele and Shahann usually sailed on different ships: but as the sinking Sun lit the sea with a broken golden streak to the west, Shahann had joined her older sister in the flagship. They had seated themselves in the bow and were speaking quietly.
"Any word?" asked Khimele.
"Nothing," said Shahann. "I cannot reach anyone near Vhaerun."
Khimele's jaw set. There was a bleakness about her eyes. But she said: "Mother's probably intentionally turning the ether to so much swirling snow, to keep Zarra guessing, and to blind any similar enemy enchantments."
Shahann nodded, not looking happy. Then she asked abruptly: "Are we ever going back?"
Khimele drew in a deep breath. She looked round the sea, at the fleet of sails pale against the sky. "Do you want to?"
Shahann said, "All of our neighbors are mad. Upriver they sacrifice their sons to the bastard offspring of two depraved and deranged shapeshifting Maiar. Blackmoor tries to conquer the world every other century. We needn't discuss the Orcs..."
"And apparently the Merfolk are no certain allies either."
"There are only two reasons for staying," said Shahann. "Mother didn't want to start a war of conquest. And Vhaerun has timber."
Khimele -- eldest daughter of Amerakhte, chieftess of a clan of drow living off the coast of Vhaerun.
Shahann -- Khimele's sister, spymistress of the clan.
Amerakhte is mentioned but not present and not named.
Two depraved and deranged shapeshifting Maiar -- Shahann means Ungoliant the Great Spider and some other evil Maia thought to be Lloth's father.
Their bastard offspring -- Lloth, an evil being who often takes the form of a spider and is worshipped as a goddess by some drow.
Zarra is Vhaerun's High Priestess of Lloth, but of late she seems to be serving Blackmoor.
