May 1 [Sirenia] Tiamat’s Succession
((OOC: Sorry for the delay in this one. We can assume it is common knowledge to all since this takes place a bit in the past. Enjoy!))
Nerissa and her entourage returned to Alassi Atargatis about a week later after their conclusion with the talks with the Drow. She had determined because of the intense war going on that actually meeting with the one known as Amerakhte would not be possible without endangering the lives of her cohorts. She had revealed a brief summary of her findings to her superior, who then relayed it to the council, which was in charge of matters until Princess Thalattē (Tiamat) Tritonia was fitful for service. Nerissa hadn’t been gone for more than about two weeks, but already so much was changing in Sirenia. The High Council had ultimately decided that Tiamat would be Sirenia’s next in line queen and the coronation had actually already taken place while Nerissa had been away on her mission.
Rumours were afloat that the trauma of having seen her dead sister, Thaleia, had caused Tiamat’s mental state to be a bit… wishy-washy. Already within a week of her ascension, Tiamat had made a sequence of quick-witted decisions. The first doctrine she had assigned was to make her sister’s passing a national “Day of Mourning”. Following that, she had relieved many instrumental people in high-placed positions within the Queendom’s government. Nerissa’s superior, for example, was just one of the victims of this executive order. Tiamat had held a firm belief that many of the “old windbags’ had long since served their time and that a new slew of merfolk be ushered into the positions. The Council was powerless to stop her, and with the recent happenings as of late, many had started to believe that a new era was beginning and that a fresh look on things was refreshing to say the least.
Nerissa found out the worst news of all within minutes of her return. She too had been relieved of her position and was no longer appropriated as an ambassador for Sirenia. The news shocked her beyond belief. When she had asked the Queen’s appointed council to reconsider, they turned their heads and asked her to leave.
As it would so happen, Tiamat was in the room with them at the time of Nerissa’s appearance. Her attitude was different from the last time they had met during the chaos in the city that lead to the eventual death of Thaleia. Nerissa pleaded her case to Her Majesty, and for a moment, it looked like Tiamat might actually reverse the decision, but then, something insane happened… Tiamat recalled the incident that lead to her sister’s demise, and upon seeing Nerissa, who had been on the scene in question, her mood quickly turned sour, and then angry. There was an instance of shouting, and tears that erupted from Tiamat’s emotions. And then, the unthinkable happened. Nerissa recalled the very moment and what was said.
“You… if you had arrived sooner, and not hesitated like the others had, my sister would still be alive today. This… this is all YOUR fault!” There seemed to be no hesitation now as Tiamat’s inner emotions consumed her, “I want you gone from this queendom. I don’t want to ever see you back here in Alassi Atargatis… You are hereby expelled. Gather your things and be gone by the morning. Don't ever return.”
Nerissa was completely and utterly shocked. When she had retorted at Tiamat’s insane order, she was pushed back from the Queen and lead out of the Council Chambers. Nerissa had noticed a few of the appointees on the Council had had questionable ethics in the past, but like others, she was powerless to do anything about it. For the first time in Nerissa’s life, she was uncertain, not only of her own future, but of Sirenia’s future as well.
The streets were in flux, though not as chaotic as the last time she had been here amid the terrorism. There was sadness and gloom all around, as if the water itself was a heavy musk and hard to breath in. Several small droves of mers were leaving town, expelled, or perhaps leaving on their own accord. It was nuts. Just a month ago, the city was a happy and prosperous place under Queen Tritonia IX regime. Now, it was collapsing from within, thanks to the egocentric mandates of a prima donna inheritor named Tiamat.
Nerissa gathered all that she could, but now she was on her own. There was only one place she could really drift towards: Vhaerun. Hopefully, it was not blown to bits by the time of her return...
